The letter itself does three things in plain language. It identifies the exact amount being sought and the reason for the claim. It gives the recipient a deadline to respond - most townships require 10 business days, and Henderson requires 15 days. And it states that if the matter isn't resolved by that deadline, a small claims action will be filed. A homeowner in Henderson chasing a $2,400 contractor refund or a small-business owner in North Las Vegas chasing an unpaid $3,800 invoice would each draft this letter the same way: short, factual, polite, and dated.

How to Send the Letter So It Counts

Two things matter at the moment the letter goes in the mail. First, the letter has to be sent certified mail with return receipt requested, addressed to each person or business being sued. A green return-receipt card has to come back to your records. Second, you have to wait the full demand period - at least 10 days in most townships, 15 days in Henderson - before filing the complaint. Filing earlier risks dismissal.

Keep originals of three documents: the demand letter itself, the certified mail receipt with the tracking number stamped by USPS, and the signed green return-receipt card when it comes back. When you later file the small claims complaint, the court clerk will want copies of all three. Losing any of them often means starting the demand period over.
