Apostille a Nevada Marriage Certificate in Las Vegas
The wedding was the easy part. A chapel on the Strip, a few friends, a photo you still keep on your phone. Back then, nobody mentioned paperwork beyond the license.
Then the email arrives. A consulate, a registry office overseas, or an employer in another country needs proof that your marriage is real, and the instructions use a word you may never have heard before: apostille. Suddenly a happy memory has a deadline attached, and you are not sure where to start.
If your marriage took place in Las Vegas or anywhere in Clark County, the path is clearer than it looks. This guide walks through how to apostille a Nevada marriage certificate, in plain language, using the instructions published by the Nevada Secretary of State and the Clark County Clerk.

What an Apostille Does for a Nevada Marriage Certificate
An apostille is a certificate attached to a public document so that it can be presented in another country. Under NRS 240.1657, the Nevada Secretary of State issues an authentication for documents intended for use in a foreign country. The Secretary of State describes it as verifying that the signature of the state official on the document is genuine.
Nevada adopted the Hague Conference model apostille certificate beginning August 1, 2013. The Nevada apostille is a trilingual certificate, and the Secretary of State lists marriage certificates among the documents it authenticates.
Step 1: Make Sure Your Marriage Certificate Has Been Filed
You cannot order a copy of a record that has not been recorded yet. According to the Clark County Clerk, the officiant has ten days to submit the marriage certificate, and a certified copy is normally available one day after the Clerk's office receives it.
For couples who married recently and are about to fly home, that timing matters. For couples who married years ago, the record is already on file and the process starts at Step 2.
Step 2: Order a Certified Copy From the County Clerk
The Nevada Secretary of State's instructions are direct: order a certified copy of your marriage certificate from the County Clerk's Office where the marriage license was issued. For Las Vegas, Henderson, Summerlin, North Las Vegas, and Boulder City weddings, that is usually the Clark County Clerk.
Clark County offers three ways to order:
Online, using a credit card
By mail, using the Clerk's request form (the Clerk asks mail customers to allow up to 3 weeks to receive the order)
In person
Certified Copy or Certified Abstract?
The Clark County Clerk's proof of marriage page describes the certified copy of the marriage certificate as the most common and widely accepted official document. It also describes a certified abstract of marriage, which it says is typically only required by some United States agencies and some foreign countries. The Clerk notes that people using the document abroad should check which original certified documents the agencies in their destination require. That question belongs with the receiving office or its consulate.
Step 3: Submit It to the Nevada Secretary of State
The County Clerk does not issue apostilles. Clark County states that apostilles are obtained from the Nevada Secretary of State's Office. According to the Secretary of State's apostille page, a request includes:
The certified copy of the marriage certificate
One completed and signed Apostille/Certification Order Form, which can cover multiple documents
An email address, the name of the country where the document will be presented, and a valid return address
Payment in an accepted form
The Secretary of State warns that an incomplete form may result in a rejection. Requests go to its Las Vegas office at 70 E. Bonneville Ave or its Carson City office at 401 North Carson St. At the time of writing, the Secretary of State lists a standard processing time of two weeks, with expedited service available, and returns documents by First Class Mail unless a prepaid return envelope is included.
When the apostille is issued, Nevada staples it to the front of the signed document page and places the state's red stamp across both pages. Keep the packet together exactly as it arrives.
Apostille or Certification? The Country Decides
Nevada describes itself as a dual document state. Under NRS 240.1657, a document headed to a country that participates in the Hague Convention of October 5, 1961 receives an apostille. A document headed to a country that does not participate receives a certification instead. That is why the order form asks for the destination country. Any further steps a non-Hague country requires are set by that country and its consulate.

Nevada Marriage Certificate Apostille FAQ
How soon after a Las Vegas wedding can I get an apostille?
The officiant has ten days to submit the certificate to the Clark County Clerk, and a certified copy is normally available one day after the Clerk receives it. The apostille request to the Secretary of State follows once you have the certified copy.
Can I apostille a photocopy of my marriage certificate?
The Nevada Secretary of State's instructions call for a certified copy of the marriage certificate, ordered from the County Clerk's Office where the marriage license was issued.
Does the apostille translate my marriage certificate?
No. The Nevada apostille is a trilingual model certificate that authenticates the official's signature. Whether the marriage certificate itself needs a translation is set by the country receiving it.
Can this be done if I no longer live in Nevada?
Clark County accepts online and mail orders for certified copies, and the Secretary of State accepts requests by mail. Our team also works with clients by mail.
