Apostille a Birth Certificate in Las Vegas: A Family Guide
The email arrives on a weeknight, after the kids are finally asleep. The school overseas, the employer abroad, or the office handling a wedding in another country has one more line on its checklist: "apostilled birth certificate." You read it twice. The birth certificate is in a folder somewhere, but you have no idea what an apostille is, who issues one, or whether the copy in that folder will even count.
If that is where you are tonight, take a breath. This is a paperwork process with clear, published steps. Here is how a Nevada birth certificate apostille works and what the Nevada Secretary of State asks for.

What is an apostille on a birth certificate?
An apostille is a certificate attached to a public document so that the document can be presented in another country. In Nevada, the Secretary of State issues it under NRS 240.1657. The apostille confirms that the signature of the public official on your document is genuine. It does not translate or vouch for what the certificate says.
Nevada is what the Secretary of State calls a "dual document state." If the country receiving your document is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, you receive an apostille. If it is not, the Secretary of State issues a certification instead, and the receiving country may have its own further steps.
Which birth certificate copy can be apostilled in Nevada?
The Nevada Secretary of State's instructions say that to have a birth certificate authenticated, you order a certified copy of the birth certificate from the state's Office of Vital Records. A few points are worth knowing before you order:
It must be a certified copy. The Secretary of State's submission page states that photocopies of records will be rejected and that the original certified copy should be submitted.
It must be a Nevada record. Nevada's process covers Nevada records. If the birth certificate was issued by another state, that state's apostille office is the place to ask.
The keepsake copy is not the same thing. Decorative or hospital keepsake certificates are not certified copies of the record. If you are unsure what you have, check before you order or submit.
Plan for the copy to travel. The apostille is attached by staples to the front of the page bearing the official's signature, so the certified copy you submit is the copy that will be sent abroad. You may find it helpful to have an extra certified copy for your own records.
How to apostille a birth certificate in Las Vegas: the steps
Here is the general process as the Nevada Secretary of State describes it.
Order the certified copy. Request a certified copy of the birth certificate from the state's Office of Vital Records.
Complete the order form. The Secretary of State publishes an Apostille/Certification Order Form. One form can cover multiple documents. The form asks for an email address, a valid return address, and the name of the country where the document will be presented. The Secretary of State notes that leaving information out may result in a rejection.
Include payment with the request. The form, payment, and documents are submitted together.
Submit by mail or in person. Requests can be mailed to the Secretary of State at 401 North Carson St., Carson City, NV 89701. In Las Vegas, the Secretary of State's office at 70 E. Bonneville Ave. has a dropbox available during regular business hours.
Plan the return. The Secretary of State returns documents by First-Class Mail unless you provide a prepaid, self-addressed envelope for another carrier.
The Secretary of State also offers expedited processing. Because processing times and options can change, check the Nevada Secretary of State apostille page for current details before you plan around a deadline.
Write down the destination country first
The country name determines whether you receive an apostille or a certification, and the order form asks for it.
Ask the receiving office about translation
Translation requirements come from the receiving country, not from Nevada, so the receiving office is the right place to ask.
Where Las Vegas families usually get stuck
Common snags tend to be small details rather than anything complicated:
Submitting a photocopy or a keepsake certificate instead of a certified copy.
Sending a birth certificate issued by another state to Nevada.
Leaving the destination country or return address off the order form.
Not keeping an extra certified copy, then needing one again for a different country later.
