How to Get a Document Notarized in Nevada | Signature on Demand

Getting a document notarized is a straightforward process when you know what is required. Requirements vary by document type and state. This page covers what Nevada law requires, how remote online notarization works for clients outside Nevada, and how Signature on Demand handles both.

What a Notarization Is

A notarial act is the formal process by which a commissioned notary public verifies the identity of a signer, witnesses the signing of a document, and affixes their official seal and signature to certify the act. In Nevada, notaries are commissioned by the Nevada Secretary of State under NRS Chapter 240.

A notarization does not mean the notary reviewed or approved the content of the document. It means the notary verified the identity of the signer and witnessed the signature. Signature on Demand is also a licensed document preparation service, which is a separate function from notarization.

Step 1: Have a Complete, Unsigned Document

The document must be fully completed before the appointment. All fields must be filled in. The only things left blank should be the signature lines. Do not sign the document before meeting the notary. A notary cannot legally complete a notarial act on a document that was signed prior to their witnessing it.

Step 2: Bring Valid, Current ID

Under NRS 240.190, a Nevada notary must verify the identity of the signer using a current government-issued photo ID. Acceptable forms include a Nevada driver's license, state ID card, U.S. passport, passport card, or U.S. military ID. The ID must not be expired. The name on the ID must match the name on the document exactly.

Step 3: Choose Mobile or Remote Online Notarization

For Las Vegas and Clark County clients, Signature on Demand travels to your location 24/7. We meet clients at homes, offices, hospitals, care facilities, and other locations throughout the county.

For clients outside Clark County or outside Nevada, remote online notarization under NRS 240.1991 allows the entire notarization to be completed via live video session. You show your ID on camera, complete identity verification, sign electronically, and receive your notarized document digitally. No travel is required from either party.

Step 4: The Notary Completes the Notarial Certificate

After witnessing your signature, the notary completes the notarial certificate portion of the document. This includes the date, the type of notarial act performed, the notary's signature, commission expiration date, and official seal. In Nevada, the notary also records the act in their notary journal as required under NRS 240.120.
